The wind was calm the temperture was warm and the sky glowed. so i took this opportunity to try a portrait or two. I talked my two sisters in sitting for me,and after yelling hold still a few times came out with a ok scene.

Had a very satisfying time doing a photo assignment at a local island store,"made here on the island".Very nice people and full of art from local islanders. I got to do some macro of jewelery. Of course I did some technical things wrong, so I am always learning, but I enjoyed the colors and textures.

Just had a moment to go out. Was alittle bland out but the fog slowly rolling in from the ocean was scenic.

Start of the Portraits.... 05/18/2010

Beach Rose
There are a few people I have spoken too that I hope to do a photographic portrait of. Some are individuals, others are couples some have dogs. The reason is that I need the practise handling the light and composing these projects. Often times the ambient light is easier to photograph. Once you start controlling and directing the light it gets much more difficult. My goal is too set the white balance, choose my f-stop and shutter speed manually ,arrange some external flashes or perhaps a reflector or diffuser,  and have the model appear in a pleasing position. It sounds easy but there are thousands of combinations of settings when all said and done. But I will try one step at a time. I was lucky enough to try the other day. At the end I was afraid I could not pull it all together but managed to have more success than failure.  Thanks Jazman!
Before the rain hit today I treated myself to a walk on State Beach. No problem finding parking today, the tourist crowds are still a few weeks away. The only color showing were the many beach roses coming into bloom. Both red and white could be found.

Draw Bridge at Night
I had to try the bridge again. This time at night. It was fun trying to slow the shutter way down to cause the car lights to streak across the frame. Now I must catch the last half off the Celtics!

Too tired to type tonight. Quick and fast version, went chipmonk hunting once again. Maybe one day I will get a clear image of them. Edgartown streets were nice and quite this afternoon. And the new draw bridge was a unexpected joy to photograph, I will definetly return here. Bye for now!

The switch to portrait photography will have to come soon. While yesterday I had the roads to myself to easily take photographs, today I can see the change. Cars are pulled over the side of the road everywhere as the tourist take pictures with their cell phones! Soon I will not be able to travel out at dusk to catch the colors of sunset.
I will have to pick some quiet out of the way places to set up for some nice portraits of people. That way I can breath easy without two budget rent a cars and five mopeds crowding me out!

A little here, A little there. 05/03/2010

Another odd weather day today. I started up island at Lucey Vincent. The winds were howling and full of sea spray and the sand was blowing. The worst place to bring your camera. But of course thats exactly where i took it! So after I finish this entry I will have to take apart and clean all my equipment, what fun.
Later in the afternoon while I was in Edgartown it was mysteriously calm. This is the best time of year to see the homes in town. The streets were empty and you could even manage a photo with no car in sight! amazing!

Fog and Sun 05/02/2010

Today was a nice quite and calm sunday. The temperture was not too hot nor too cold but just right. The winds were calm and cool. I have mentioned this before but it always amazes me how many mini-climates there are here on our island. Down island the trees have a full coat of leaves showing. Up island the trees are all bare. Today Vineyard Haven had blue skies and white puffy clouds. Gay Head had a thick fog. Both were fun to be in.
Standing on the lookout in Gay Head you could not even get a peek at the cliffs. But looking toward the left you could see waves of fog rolling like a river over the bluff and out to sea.
In Tisbury the temperture was warm and everyone was out bike riding and jogging. The summer crowds have yet to come so there were parking places for all. It has been a long and cold winter and you could tell how everyone was enjoying this day.

I have lived here on Martha's Vineyard all of my life. One thing I love is that every day and every hour, the light and weather and seasons are always changing, always making for fun photography.
